DAY ONE I decided to start my detox on a Sunday, to avoid the temptations of the office canteen.

However, I woke up in such a daze I had made a cup of coffee before I even realised what I was doing. Ooops! Not the best start.

Once I finally assembled the syrup, lemons, etc and mixed the drink, I was pleasantly surprised to find it was quite sweet - the syrup would sit happily atop a stack of pancakes, and the lemon and ginger were quite refreshing.

I made up a two-litre bottle of the drink and sipped it quite happily throughout the day.

As I was busy visiting family and working on the computer, I actually found day one quite straightforward - the hunger pangs only started in the evening and by that time I was so tired, I just went to bed with a book to distract me. One day down, four to go.

DAY TWO My first brush with temptation! I decided a visit to the cinema was a good idea - after all, a two-and-a-half-hour film would certainly distract me.

Unfortunately, I forgot about the refreshments counter. I had to stand in the queue with a friend and my 13-year-old nephew while they loaded up on goodies, and I ordered a bottle of water.

It would have been sensible to take some of the lemon mix with me, but I got up late and was very unorganised.

At least my will-power didn't let me down and the film was indeed a good distraction.

Still no nasty side effects, I'm feeling good and quite virtuous. I tend to be quite healthy on the weekends anyway, and have been meaning to have a break from junk food and alcohol for a while.

Yes, replacing all meals with drinks is a little extreme but at this early stage, it all feels very straightforward.

DAY THREE Uh-oh. The headaches have hit me, and they've hit hard.

Having breezed through my first 48 hours, I was surprised to find day three so difficult, but there were a lot of obstacles to contend with - my first day in the office on the detox plan, and my body is obviously craving the caffiene that usually sustains me through my shift.

I drank lots of water and took a couple of painkillers but the pain stayed with me pretty much all day.

I was in an awful mood, really grumpy - my poor colleagues suffered from my temper more than once.

I also went to the gym, as the programme recommends light exercise to help the metabolism. It was pretty hard, I certainly didn't have my usual energy, but the leaflet had warned me this might happen.

In the evening, I had a hot bath and used a body scrub to encourage more of the dastardly toxins out of my skin. A bit of internet surfing and reading cheered me up, and I slept really well.

DAY FOUR The headaches are still here but not as bad as yesterday - besides, this far in I'm determined not to quit! I'm also starting to see the effects, which helps my motivation.

My waist feels neater, my skin is smooth and glowing and I've got a bit more energy than yesterday.

Unfortunately I've gone off the flavour of the water. I'm finding it too sweet, so perhaps I should add more lemon tomorrow and experiment with cayenne pepper, which can be used as an alternative to ginger.

Work was difficult - even walking for the bus felt like a huge effort. I couldn't face the gym, as I felt a little dizzy.

Perhaps I need to up my liquid intake.

DAY FIVE Feeling much better today - still a little weak but I'm definitely not drinking enough of the lemon mixture.

After five days of syrup, it just tastes too sweet to stomach. I'm having a glass at mealtimes, and lots of water, but that's all.

Thankfully, the results are already evident. I've lost an inch of my waist, half an inch off each thigh, and dropped five pounds already.

My skin is glowing, though I am a little pale. It will be interesting to see how these stats develop once I reintroduce food gradually - my tastes feel like they've altered, I'm no longer craving junk food. I can't think of anything nicer than a fresh salad, though tonight I'm going to start off gradually with a couple of smoothies.

THE VERDICT I was really impressed with the Lemon Detox. It wasn't easy - giving up food entirely for five days is certainly an extreme diet - but it was at least simple to follow the rules. I felt tired and drained in the latter days but I was still able to go about my usual daily routine. However I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with a physical job, or with children to run around after. Unless you have a week's holiday to do this detox in, think twice, as you will struggle with more energetic tasks.

RESULT Five pound weight loss in five days - over the following month this increased to half a stone, which I have successful kept off, more or less. I also lost an inch off my waist.

THE DETOX: SMOOTHIE DETOX FEATURING HAWAIIAN SPIRULINA PACIFICA SUPPLIMENTS

WHAT IT INVOLVES: Replacing meals with fruit smoothies, i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner for 5 days. Micro Organics Spirulina supplement can be taken in powder form added to the smoothie or in tablet form (6 per day)

DAY ONE Disaster. Nursing a Sunday morning hang-over and bleary eyes it was only once I'd eaten a slice of toast and peanut butter did I realise that this definitely wasn't a smoothie.

Fast-forward to Monday: And it's smoothie heaven all round. I'm supposed to make my own smoothies and add the powdered Hawaiian spiriulina to the mix.

This is clearly not going to work for me for various reasons; no smoothie maker, I'm a disaster in the kitchen, and I'm not sure I can stomach the green looking powder - which smells a bit like pond weed - in liquid form.

Luckily there's prêt and M&S near the office so I pop in to stock up on ready made smoothies for the day. I'm feeling quite virtuous and not only are the smoothies tasty, but they're surprisingly filling as well.

During the day I pop six of the spirulina tablets - they're pretty big, but definitely more palatable than the powder.

By the end of the day, I'm happy to note that my stomach is churning away - no doubt burning up all the excess fat well a little bit of positive thinking never hurt anyone

DAY TWO I'm feeling hungry but not achingly so and I make an effort to make a meal of my smoothies!

I feel generally well - surprising considering I'm something of a coffee junkie and generally find it impossible to make it through a day without my daily fix.

Late afternoon I do start to flag a little though so to combat this I decide to eat a banana. Now - strictly speaking, this is not cheating (??). After all, bananas are a key ingredient in many smoothie recipes. Or so I try to convince myself.

Tuesday night I work an evening shift - keeping myself busy I barely notice the hungerand hang on - I'm sure my stomach's starting to look flatter.

DAY THREE If it wasn't for the very tangible difference to my waist-size, I'm not sure I could have got through the headaches I woke up to on day three. Accompanied by general nausea, there's no respite the entire day.

I'm also decidedly sick of 'eating' smoothies all day long. But I am loosing weight and am feeling lighter, so I down copious amounts of water and concentrate on resisting temptation.

And it's not easy. But 'only two more days to go'...

DAY FOUR Oh dear oh dear. Well, on the plus side, today I feel fantastic.

Could it be the nutritious effects of the vitamin laden spirulina infusing me with boundless energy?

I'm noticeably loosing weight and people have commented on my freshness of face. There's nothing like a compliment to spur you up the hill of smoothie difficulty.

But danger looms in the form of team drinks that evening. I've avoided all stimulants so far but the lure of a sly tipple is too much to resist. After all, I've almost finished - I deserve a little treat!

To begin with I decide a vodka would be in keeping with the 'pureness' of the exercise, but come closing time I've succumbed to what I can only describe as 'beer smoothies'.

Later that night, I guiltily take my final spirulina tablets of the day in the vain hope of absolution.

DAY FIVE Last day last day Today is all about reaching the end. I'm feeling good but jittery - I just want to eat something 'normal'.

Interestingly though, I'm not craving a huge meal as the detox seems to have quelled my overall appetite. I'm also quite energised - maybe the spirulina, or could it be those beer smoothies from the previous evening?

THE VERDICT Well, I'm definitely thinner. But considering I've barely eaten anything for five days this is hardly surprising. So yes, I'm impressed, but I wonder if this is more of a crash diet rather than a detox? Having said that, my eating habits have altered. Post detox I haven't been raiding the chocolate machine or carb loading as I imagined I would have. So maybe this experience has been more of a kick-start for a healthy eating regime.

RESULT Six pound weight loss in five days - over the following few weeks I did put two pounds back on, but then again, I was eating food! Inch off waist plus noticeably thinner thighs.

DAY ONE I started my detox on a Sunday as I knew that I wasnt going to be out and about and therefore could not pop into any fast food places.

I woke up and instantly made a cup of tea. Boots suggest that with the detox you should try and steer away from large quantities of tea and coffee, but as I am a tea junkie I couldnt resist.

Once awake and ready I went food shopping. This it seemed was harder than I had expected. My boyfriend and I both were in amazement at the sort of things I couldnt actually eat (even though it seems there is a large quantity you can).

Its just getting the right mix so instead of the usual Sunday roast I had to substitute this for chicken fillets (no sauce) with brown rice and salad.

This it seemed was going to be harder than I had imagined.

In between eating fruit and dinner I had made up a litre of water with one of the phials this tasted of really diluted apple juice, and considering it was really weak it was still bearable to drink.

I also found the water bloated me out quite a bit but the mineral supplement was pleasant enough to take.

I did feel slightly hungry throughout the day but I think it was because I was thinking about what I couldnt eat!

DAY TWO I woke up feeling bloated and really dehydrated. I constantly needed to pop to the toilet whilst trying to get ready for work.

I substituted my breakfast (which as everyone here knows I rarely eat) for some of the water and one mineral tablets. I would not advise this.

I was doing a double shift at work this day. I had managed to throw a container of salad, including, rocket, red pepper, brie cheese and sesame seeds so chomped away on that for lunch with an apple and my diluted water.

I had also brought with me some carrot sticks to eat throughout the day and had even started to limit my intake of tea.

First mistake hit though, as by the time it got to 8pm I was starving and could only think about food.

I ended up eating a jacket potato and cheese for dinner plus a packet of crisps!

DAY THREE After little sleep and a double shift I woke up with a bad headache and still felt bloated.

I was working another night shift and realised I had to eat something more substantial if I was going to last the day and night.

I opted to eat some wholemeal toast for breakfast and a cup of tea which made me feel miles better.

I weighed myself and was shocked to see I had already lost 4lbs.

I skipped lunch as I had had breakfast so late and by the time I got to work at 4pm I was feeling quite good.

The bloating had gone down and my skin was looking fresh.

I did nearly forget to take my supplement tablet but remember just in time before I left my flat.

For dinner I opted to grab a takeaway from Prêt (avocado and crayfish salad) with an apple and water.

This was good enough and although I drank lots of water I also opted for lots of tea which managed to suppress my appetite.

DAY FOUR I woke up quite dehydrated again. By the time I got to work I was starving.

Luckily for us our canteen makes an amazing fry-up. Although most carbohydrates are meant to be prohibited from this detox I grabbed some mushrooms, a fried egg and a slice of bacon, with no sauces. Just what the doctor ordered!

I still felt quite tired but and after a hearty breakfast didnt really feel hungry again until late afternoon.

I had taken my supplement tablet early in the morning and drunk most of my water.

I was very hungry by the time I got home so had cod and peas (an alternative to fish and chips) and then went to bed early as the tiredness took over.

DAY FIVE I found it a little easier to get up today, my headaches and tiredness had gone and I felt quite happy and after showering I weighed myself and was surprised to learn that I had lost 6lbs.

Once again today after seeing the results, I had a salad for lunch and a yoghurt as I wanted to start keeping off the weight.

After work I went for a few drinks with colleagues but managed to stay off the alcohol (which Boots also suggest) and just drink cranberry and lemonade.

I felt more healthy and revitalised but was glad to be giving up the phials.

THE VERDICT This was actually one of the easiest detoxes I have ever followed plus you are allowed to eat proper portions and proper food. The water and phial mix was not to my taste but was bearable to drink. I was quite blasé about the whole thing throughout and didnt really realise that I had lost so much weight, therefore I was surprised at the end as I had felt dehydrated, bloated and a little moody throughout.

RESULT Six pound weight loss in five days my weight has fluctuated since but I have still managed to keep most of this off and feel a lot lighter with it. I also have very clear skin.
